Picture 3 of 3

A principal urban artery running through the east side of Indianapolis, this stretch of U.S. 40 is a high traffic count commercial corridor with eight major retail centers. Within the 2.5 mile project limits, the existing roadway and intersections were not providing an acceptable level of service, and in fact, accounted for over 540 car accidents and over 200 injuries in the corridor in a three-year period.

The roadway was widened to three lanes in each direction with a flush center two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL) or raised median. Improvements such as turn lanes and signal modernizations were made at all major intersections. Two bridges were replaced as part of the project and drainage through the corridor was improved through a new storm sewer system. The whole project was accomplished with a carefully phased construction approach to maintain high traffic volume.

Certified Engineering was responsible for: project management; design survey; road design; bridge design; drainage design; signing design; traffic signal design; pavement marking design; erosion control and maintenance of traffic.

With the addition of travel lanes and improvements to intersections, a reduction in traffic congestion and accident frequency has been achieved.
